Taiwan is home to more than 23 million people, and the total area of the country is 36,000 kilometers(14,400 square miles). It is shaped like a leaf that is narrow at both ends. It lies off the southeastern coast of mainland Asia, across the Taiwan Strait from China – an island on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean.
The island enjoys warm weather all year round,as the annual average temperature is a comfortable 22℃ with the lowest temperatures on the lowlands generally ranging from 12 to 17℃ (54-63 ℉). The rainy season usually falls in March to May, continuously drizzling rain will sometimes fall on Taiwan.
The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese; but because many Taiwanese are of southern Fujianese (福建) descent, Minnan (the Southern Min dialect, 閩南方言 or Heluo,河洛話) is also widely spoken. The smaller groups of Hakka (客家) people and indigenous tribes have also preserved their own languages. Many elderly people can also speak some Japanese, as they were subjected to Japanese education before Taiwan was returned to Chinese rule in 1945 after the Japanese occupation, which lasted for half a century. Also, there are lots of migrant workers from Southeastern Asia. As for religions, there are about 90% of people believing in Buddhism and Taoism, and 5% of people believing in Christianity or Islam.

In terms of commodity prices, the consumer price index decreased 0.05% this December (2018) in comparison to the last year. As for the employment situation, the average number of employed is 11.48 million people as of this December (2018); the average unemployment rate is 3.66%.
The Taiwanese economy is one of the Four Asian Dragons, and has the highest export status in the world. In the 1970s, Taiwan implemented the ten major projects and laid the foundation for the development of heavy industries. Taiwan has been involved in industry, especially light industries, manufacturing, and started shipbuilding in 1976. Production and technology, and represents the most important achievement of the Taiwanese experience in its development model, which has made progress leading to the industrialization stage.
Economy in Taiwan is now transformed into a knowledge-based and innovative economy by adopting a strategy. In recent years, it has started to establish large capital-based industries, high skill levels, establishment of scientific research centers and attracting technology experts.
